Car Seat Laws in Málaga: What Parents Should Know Before Getting Around with Kids

Traveling to Málaga with your little ones? Whether you're arriving at the airport, catching a taxi to your hotel, or renting a car to explore the Costa del Sol, it’s important to understand Spain’s car seat laws. As parents ourselves, we know how stressful it can be figuring this out on the fly—especially in a new country.

At Taxi Bambino, we help families travel safely and comfortably. Here’s what you need to know about child car seat regulations in Málaga, including what applies in taxis, rental cars, and private vehicles—plus how we can help make your ride safe from the moment you land.

What Are the Car Seat Laws in Spain?

According to Spanish law, children under 135 cm in height (approx. 4’5”) must use a child restraint system that’s appropriate for their size and weight. This applies in private vehicles, car rentals, and most taxi rides.

Children under 12 must also ride in the back seat, unless the back seats are already occupied by other children in child restraints.

You can read more about the official requirements on the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) website, which is Spain’s national traffic authority.

Do You Need a Car Seat in Málaga Taxis?

This is where things get a bit unclear for visiting families. In Spain, urban taxis (like in Málaga city) are technically exempt from the car seat requirement, meaning they can carry children without a seat for short city rides.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Most parents prefer to use a proper child seat whenever possible, even for short distances—especially in busy city traffic or on airport routes.

That’s why Taxi Bambino offers pre-booked taxis in Málaga with infant seats, toddler seats, or boosters, ready and installed when you arrive. Whether you're going from Málaga Airport (AGP) to Marbella, Nerja, or downtown Málaga, we’ve got your family covered.

Renting a Car in Málaga?

If you’re planning to rent a car to explore the Costa del Sol, you’ll need to follow the full car seat laws. Most rental car agencies offer child car seats as an optional add-on, but availability isn’t always guaranteed—especially during the summer holidays.

Some parents choose to bring their own car seat from home, while others prefer to book airport transfers with Taxi Bambino first, then rent a car later from their hotel once they’ve settled in.

Whatever you decide, be sure the seat meets EU safety standards (ECE R44/04 or the newer i-Size R129), or you could face fines if stopped.
