Spanish Car Seat Law in Madrid — Taxis, Uber and Cabify

Spain’s child car seat law is Artículo 117 del Real Decreto 1428/2003 (DGT). Children under 135 cm must use an approved child restraint (silla de retención infantil) in all vehicles. For taxis, a partial urban exemption applies for short journeys within city limits. However:

  • Airport transfers on the M-40/M-30 motorways: the urban exemption does NOT apply on the high-speed ring roads surrounding Madrid. Child seat legally required for MAD airport transfers. DGT and local police conduct spot checks near Barajas. Fine: €200.

  • Uber and Cabify are VTCs — NOT exempt: Uber and Cabify operate in Madrid as VTCs (vehículos de transporte con conductor) and are NOT covered by the taxi urban exemption. They must carry seats for children under 135 cm. In practice, few drivers carry one.

  • €30 fixed fare from MAD: the Comunidad de Madrid regulates a flat rate of €30 from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport to any destination within the M-30 ring road. This covers the vast majority of Madrid city centre hotels. No supplements for luggage, no day/night difference. Valid for all licensed Madrid taxis.

  • Seat confirmed at booking — infant seat, forward-facing or booster, installed before your driver arrives

  • Driver at MAD arrivals with name sign — T1, T2, T3 or T4/T4S. Specify your terminal: T4 is a separate area.

Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) — Five Terminals

Madrid–Barajas (IATA: MAD) is Spain’s busiest airport and one of the largest in Europe, located 13 km northeast of central Madrid (18 km for T4). It has five terminal areas — this matters for families pre-booking a transfer:

  • T1, T2, T3 (older terminals): connected by internal walkways. T1 mainly international non-Iberia carriers; T2 older charters and regionals; T3 short-haul. Taxi rank directly outside each terminal.

  • T4 and T4S (main international terminal — Iberia hub): a separate building area 5 km from T1–3. Handles Iberia (including long-haul), Iberia Express, Vueling. Always check your airline’s terminal before booking. A driver at T1 cannot quickly get to T4 arrivals.

  • Metro Line 8 (Pink): connects T1/T2/T3 and T4 separately to Nuevos Ministerios in approximately 12–15 minutes for approximately €4.50–5.00 (airport supplement). Changes required for most Madrid hotels. Luggage + children + stairs: impractical for families.

  • Airport Express Bus: €5, 24-hour service to Atocha station. No car seat. Faster than metro but still requires a final taxi.

  • Uber and Cabify: both active at MAD. No guaranteed child seat. VTCs are legally required to carry seats but rarely do.

  • Pre-booked transfers (Taxibambino): driver at T1, T2, T3, T4, or T4S arrivals with name sign. Car seat confirmed. €30 flat rate to most city destinations.

MAD → Segovia (aqueduct, Alcázar)

Approximately €90–120 (92 km, 65―80 min via A-6/AP-61). Segovia has the best-preserved Roman aqueduct in the world and the fairy-tale Alcázar castle (the inspiration for Cinderella’s castle). Popular with families with children who like castles.

MAD → El Escorial (Royal Monastery)

Approximately €70–90 (55 km, 50–65 min via A-6). El Escorial is the Royal Monastery and Palace of Philip II — a UNESCO site and the burial place of most Spanish monarchs. Dramatic mountain location.

MAD → Ávila (medieval walls, saints)

Approximately €100–135 (113 km, 75–90 min via A-6). Ávila has the best-preserved medieval city walls in the world. A manageable day trip by car from Madrid, impractical by public transport with young children.

Car Seat Types Available for Madrid Transfers

All seats meet ECE R44/04 or ECE R129 (i-Size). Spanish law threshold: 135 cm. From September 2024, new seats sold in Spain must comply with R129. Provide weight and height when booking.

  • Capazo / Babyschale (rear-facing, up to 13 kg) : birth to approx. 12―15 months. Required on MAD motorway transfers. Most rank taxis carry none. Pre-booking essential.

  • Silla infantil with harness (9–18 kg) : approx. 9 months to 4 years. Required on M-40/M-30 airport transfers.

  • Alzador con respaldo (15―36 kg) : approx. 4―11 years. Required until 135 cm. Preferred for day trips (Toledo, Segovia).

  • Alzador simple (22―36 kg) : approx. 6―12 years. New backless cushions cannot be sold in Spain since September 2024.

Which MAD terminal do I need?

T4 and T4S are the main international terminals serving Iberia, Iberia Express, Vueling, and connecting flights. Most long-haul arrivals (Americas, Asia, Africa) arrive at T4. T1 handles other international carriers (American, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France). T2 and T3 handle smaller routes. Check your airline booking. Specify your terminal when booking with Taxibambino — T4 is a separate area from T1/T2/T3 and a driver positioned at T1 cannot quickly reach T4.

Do Madrid taxis have child car seats?

Almost never as standard. Spanish law (Art. 117 RD 1428/2003) gives licensed taxis a partial urban exemption for short city journeys, but this does not apply to MAD airport transfers on the M-40/M-30 motorways. Most Madrid rank taxis carry no seat. Uber and Cabify (VTCs) are not covered by the urban exemption and should carry seats but rarely do.
