Thailand Car Seat Law in Bangkok — Law Exists, Enforcement Limited

Thailand updated its child passenger safety law in September 2022 (Land Traffic Act, amended). Children under 6 years old must use an approved child restraint in all vehicles. The law applies throughout Thailand, including Bangkok. Key points:

  • Under 6 years: child seat required by law. Applies to taxis and private hire vehicles in principle.

  • Enforcement is very limited: Thailand does not strictly enforce child car seat laws in taxis. Most Bangkok taxi drivers carry no seat, and many are unaware of their obligation. Confirmed by multiple Taxibambino guides (2025).

  • Tuk-tuks and songthaews: three-wheeled open vehicles that are completely unsuitable for child seats. Not recommended for families with infants or young children requiring a restraint.

  • Grab in Bangkok: the dominant ride-hailing app in Bangkok (Uber exited Southeast Asia in 2018). Grab does not guarantee a child seat on standard bookings. GrabFamily or car seat options are not reliably available in Bangkok.

Bangkok’s Two Airports — BKK and DMK

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) — 30 km east of city centre

Suvarnabhumi (pronounced ‘soo-WAHN-na-poom’, IATA: BKK) is Thailand’s main international hub. One of the largest airports in Southeast Asia, located 30 km east of central Bangkok. Handles Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, and most long-haul carriers. Single main terminal.

  • Airport taxi (metered, official): dedicated public taxi counters on Level 1 (Ground Floor). Official metered taxis with THB 50 airport surcharge. Always use the official public taxi counter — not drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Expressway tolls (THB 50–120) are paid by the passenger.

  • Airport Rail Link: direct train from BKK to Phaya Thai station (city centre) in 30 minutes for THB 150. Good for adults with light bags. No car seat. Impractical with infant carrier and suitcases.

  • Grab at BKK: Grab operates from BKK. No guaranteed child seat. Variable availability after major flight banks. Do not rely on Grab for airport pickup with a child seat.

Don Mueang Airport (DMK) — 24 km north of city centre

Don Mueang (IATA: DMK) is Bangkok’s second airport, handling mainly budget and domestic carriers: AirAsia, Lion Air, Nok Air, and some international budget routes. 24 km north of central Bangkok. Older terminal, less busy than BKK. A significant number of intraregional flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and other Southeast Asian cities arrive at DMK rather than BKK.

  • Taxi from DMK: same official public taxi counter system as BKK. THB 50 airport surcharge applies. Expressway tolls extra.

  • Bus: several bus routes from DMK to the city centre (Mo Chit BTS station, Victory Monument). Cheap (THB 30) but slow and impractical with family luggage.

  • BKK vs DMK: always check your airline. Families flying AirAsia (Malaysia), Lion Air (Indonesia), or Nok Air (Thailand) frequently arrive at DMK, not BKK. A driver positioned at BKK for a DMK arrival cannot reach you.

Transfer Fares from BKK and DMK — THB

All fares in Thai Baht (THB). Bangkok taxis are metered (base fare THB 35). A THB 50 airport surcharge applies from both BKK and DMK. Expressway tolls (THB 50–120 depending on route) are paid by the passenger separately. Journey times are highly variable due to Bangkok’s severe traffic. BKK → Sukhumvit (Asok, Nana, Ekkamai, On Nut — main tourist/expat zone)

BKK → Silom / Sathorn / Bangrak (business district, Patpong)

Approximately THB 380–550 (30–35 km, 40―65 min). Silom and Sathorn are Bangkok’s main business and hotel district on the west side of the city. The BTS/MRT interchange at Sala Daeng/Silom connects to both rail lines.

BKK → Old Town / Rattanakosin (Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Khaosan Road)

Approximately THB 400–620 (33–38 km, 50–80 min). Bangkok’s historic island (Rattanakosin) — the Grand Palace, Wat Pho (reclining Buddha), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), and the Emerald Buddha. The most visited family area in Bangkok. No BTS direct — taxi or boat recommended for families.

DMK → Sukhumvit / city centre

Approximately THB 300–500 (35–38 km, 40―65 min via Expressway). DMK to central Bangkok via the Expressway is usually 40–50 minutes during off-peak. During rush hours (07:00–10:00 and 17:00–20:00) this can extend to 75–90 minutes.

BKK/DMK → Pattaya (Gulf of Thailand beach resort)

Approximately THB 1,800–2,500 from BKK (150 km, 90–120 min via Motorway 7); THB 1,500–2,000 from DMK. Pattaya is Thailand’s most popular beach resort within driving distance of Bangkok. Many families go directly from BKK to Pattaya. Pre-book with confirmed car seat and fixed price for the motorway drive.

All seats meet ECE R44/04 or ECE R129 (i-Size). Thai law uses age (under 6) as the threshold. Provide weight and height when booking.

Do Bangkok taxis have child car seats?

No. Despite the September 2022 Thai law requiring seats for children under 6, enforcement in Bangkok taxis is very limited. The vast majority of Bangkok taxis carry no seat. Grab (the dominant ride-hailing app) does not guarantee a seat on standard bookings. What is the difference between BKK and DMK?

How bad is Bangkok traffic for airport transfers?

Bangkok consistently ranks as one of the world’s most congested cities. A 30 km transfer from BKK to Sukhumvit takes 40–60 minutes off-peak and can extend to 90+ minutes during weekday rush hours (07:00–10:00 and 17:00–20:00). Can I take a tuk-tuk with my baby in Bangkok?
