Singapore Car Seat Law — Taxis vs. Grab and Gojek

Singapore’s Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Wearing of Seat Belts) Rules require children under 135 cm in height to use an approved child restraint in all vehicles. However, the law creates a critical distinction between vehicle types:

Licensed taxis — exempt from the child seat requirement

Licensed taxis (ComfortDelGro, TransCab, SMRT Taxis, Premier Taxis) are legally exempt from the obligation to carry or provide a child seat. A child under 135 cm may legally travel in a licensed taxi without one, provided the child sits in the rear seat. The rationale: passengers flagging taxis on the street cannot be expected to have pre-arranged a seat. Source: SingaporeLegalAdvice.com — Car Seat Rules in Singapore

Grab, Gojek and private-hire vehicles — NOT exempt

Grab, Gojek, and other private-hire vehicles (PHVs) are not covered by the taxi exemption. They must comply with the same child restraint rules as private cars. A Grab driver without a seat for a child under 135 cm is technically non-compliant. In practice, most standard Grab and Gojek drivers carry no seat. GrabFamily is Grab’s dedicated child seat service, but availability during peak hours is limited and the seat provided may not be appropriate for your child’s weight or height. Pre-booking through Taxibambino is the only way to guarantee a certified seat is installed before your driver arrives.

  • Seat confirmed at booking — infant seat, forward-facing or booster, installed before your driver arrives

  • Driver in SIN arrivals with your name sign — specify your terminal (T1, T2, T3, or T4) when booking

  • Fixed SGD price confirmed before travel — Singapore uses the Singapore Dollar (SGD). Airport surcharge included.

  • Flight monitoring — driver adjusts for delays at no extra charge

  • Under 135 cm: child restraint required in private vehicles, Grab, Gojek. Licensed taxis exempt, but rear seat mandatory.

  • GrabFamily: exists, but limited availability, particularly at Changi during peak arrival windows. Seat type may not suit your child.

  • SGD (Singapore Dollar): Singapore’s currency. Exchange rate approximately SGD 1.35–1.40 = 1 USD (2026).

Changi Airport (SIN) — What Families Need to Know

Singapore Changi Airport (IATA: SIN) is consistently ranked the world’s best airport. It is located in Changi, approximately 20 km northeast of the city centre (Orchard Road, Marina Bay). Four main terminals: T1, T2, T3, and T4. T1, T2, and T3 are connected by the Skytrain; T4 is separate. Always confirm your terminal when booking a Taxibambino transfer.

  • Taxi rank: basement level of each terminal. Licensed taxis regulated by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Airport surcharge: SGD 3–5 applies on top of the metered fare for all rides from Changi. Also a peak-hour surcharge and midnight surcharge may apply.

  • MRT (East-West Line): Changi Airport Station (T2/T3) connects to the city in approximately 30–35 minutes for SGD 2.00–2.80. T4 requires a shuttle bus to Changi Airport MRT. Excellent for adults travelling light. No car seat available — not suitable for families with infant carriers and multiple suitcases.

  • Grab at Changi: pick-up from designated Grab zones at each terminal. GrabFamily can be selected in-app, but availability is variable. Standard Grab has no guaranteed seat.

  • Pre-booked transfers (Taxibambino): driver meets you inside arrivals at your terminal with name sign. Car seat confirmed and installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Singapore taxis have child car seats?

Not as standard. Licensed taxis in Singapore are legally exempt from the child seat requirement. Most ComfortDelGro, SMRT, and other licensed taxis carry no child seat. GrabFamily provides seats but availability is limited and the seat type may not suit your specific child. Pre-booking through Taxibambino is the only way to guarantee a confirmed, certified seat at Changi or for any city transfer.

Is Grab or a licensed taxi better for families with young children?

For families with children under 135 cm who need a car seat, neither standard Grab nor a rank taxi provides guaranteed seat availability. GrabFamily is the closest equivalent, but it is not always available and the seat may not be correct for your child’s weight. Licensed taxis are legally exempt from child seat requirements; standard Grab/Gojek are technically required to carry seats but rarely do. The practical answer for confirmed child seat availability is a pre-booked Taxibambino transfer.

How much is a taxi from Changi Airport to the city?

Approximately SGD 28–42 metered to Marina Bay, Orchard Road, or the city centre, including the Changi airport surcharge (SGD 3–5). Journey time approximately 20–35 minutes. Additional surcharges apply during peak hours (06:00–09:30, 18:00–00:00) and midnight. Taxibambino transfers confirm a fixed SGD price including all surcharges at the time of booking.

Does the MRT go from Changi Airport to the city?

Yes. The MRT East-West Line connects Changi Airport Station (under T2 and T3) to the city in approximately 30–35 minutes for SGD 2.00–2.80. T4 requires a free shuttle bus to the MRT station. Excellent for adults. For families with an infant carrier, a stroller, and multiple suitcases, the pre-booked taxi with confirmed car seat is the door-to-door alternative that avoids stairs, escalators, and the baggage challenge on peak-hour MRT services.

Which terminal at Changi Airport are you in?

T1, T2, and T3 handle most major international carriers and are connected by the Skytrain. T4 handles primarily low-cost carriers (Scoot, AirAsia, Cathay Pacific from certain routes) and is separate — it has its own taxi rank and its own MRT shuttle. Always check your airline booking for the terminal. Specify your terminal when booking with Taxibambino so your driver is at the correct arrivals hall.
