UK taxis and private hire vehicles hold a conditional exemption, not a blanket one: it applies where no correct seat is available, a child aged 3 or over then uses the adult belt in the rear, and a child under 3 may travel in the rear without one.
Independently of the law, the physics are unchanged: a seat approved to the applicable standard and fitted on rigid ISOFIX anchors holds its line where a belt-only fit works loose — particularly on the M4, M25 and the airport approaches.
