Visiting Milan with kids? Whether you're flying into Malpensa or Linate, catching a taxi to your hotel, or renting a car for a scenic drive through Lombardy, it’s essential to understand Italy’s car seat laws—especially if you’re traveling with children.
At Taxi Bambino, we make it easy for families to get around safely and comfortably. Here’s what you need to know about car seat rules in Milan, how they apply to taxis and rental cars, and how we can help make your travel stress-free.
What Are the Car Seat Laws in Italy?
Under Italian law, children under 150 cm (4'11") and under 36 kg (79 lbs) must be secured in an approved child restraint system (CRS) that fits their age, height, and weight. This law applies across private vehicles, car rentals, and taxis, and is enforced throughout Milan and the rest of the country.
Children must sit in the rear seats, unless the back seats are already occupied by other children in car seats. If a child does sit in the front seat, the airbag must be deactivated when using a rear-facing seat.
You can find more details about this regulation via the European Commission Road Safety Portal and ACI – Automobile Club d’Italia (IT).
What About Taxis in Milan?
Taxis in Italy, including Milan, are exempt from car seat rules for short-distance urban travel. This means you may legally ride in a taxi with your child without a car seat, but only within city limits.
That said, most parents—ourselves included—prefer not to take the risk. While the law allows it, safety should always come first, especially in busy city traffic or on airport routes.
That’s why Taxi Bambino gives you the option to book a taxi in Milan with a child seat already installed. Whether you need a rear-facing infant seat, forward-facing toddler seat, or booster, we’ll make sure it’s ready when your taxi arrives—especially for important transfers like from Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN) Airport.
Renting a Car in Milan?
If you’re renting a car during your stay in Milan, you'll need to follow Italy’s child restraint laws just like a local. Most rental car companies provide child seats as an optional add-on, but they often have limited stock and mixed quality.
If you're unsure about the condition or availability of a car seat, many families choose to book an airport taxi with us first, and rent a car later once they’re settled.
Make sure any seat you bring or rent meets EU safety standards (ECE R44/04 or R129/i-Size) to avoid issues during roadside checks.
