Portuguese Car Seat Law and Lisbon Taxis
Portugal’s child car seat rules are set by Article 55 of the Código da Estrada and confirmed by the IMT (Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes). Children under 135 cm or under 12 years must use an approved child restraint in all vehicles.
The key point for families: licensed Portuguese taxis are exempt from the obligation to carry or provide a child seat. A child may legally travel in a licensed taxi without one. In practice, most Lisbon rank taxis carry no seat. Uber and Bolt both operate in Lisbon but also do not guarantee child seats on standard bookings.
-
Car seat confirmed at booking — infant seat, forward-facing or booster, installed before your driver arrives at LIS
-
Driver in LIS arrivals with name sign — no taxi rank queue after a transatlantic or European flight
-
Fixed EUR price confirmed before travel — no meter surprises, no night supplement on agreed price
-
Flight monitoring — driver adjusts for delays at no extra charge
-
Under 135 cm or under 12 years: child restraint required in private vehicles and rideshare. Licensed taxis exempt.
-
Note: 135 cm in Portugal vs. 150 cm in Germany. A 140 cm child who needs no seat in Germany still needs one in Portugal.
-
Uber and Bolt in Lisbon: both active, neither guarantees a seat. Uber Car Seat does not exist in Portugal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Lisbon taxis have child car seats?
Rarely by default. Portuguese taxis are legally exempt from the obligation to carry or provide child seats (Código da Estrada, Art. 55, confirmed by IMT). Most Lisbon rank taxis carry no seat. Uber and Bolt also do not guarantee child seats in Lisbon. Pre-booking through Taxibambino is the only reliable option.
How much does a taxi from Lisbon Airport cost?
Approximately €10–15 metered to Baixa or Chiado — one of the cheapest airport-to-centre transfers in Western Europe. No official flat rate from LIS; metered tariff applies. By Portuguese law, taxis must use the taxameter. Pre-booked Taxibambino transfers offer a confirmed fixed EUR price.
Is the Metro from Lisbon Airport good for families?
The Metro Red Line is excellent for adults travelling light (20–25 min, €1.65 to city centre). For families with an infant seat, a pram, and multiple suitcases, the pre-booked taxi transfer is the door-to-door alternative. The Metro has stairs and escalators and is crowded during peak hours.
Can you arrange a transfer from LIS directly to Sintra?
Yes. The LIS–Sintra direct transfer (30 km, approximately 30–40 minutes, €38–55 fixed) is one of our most popular bookings. Many families fly into Lisbon and go directly to Sintra on arrival day before their Lisbon hotel. Provide both stops when booking for a fixed price covering the full itinerary.
Does the 135 cm rule apply the same as in Germany?
No. Portugal uses 135 cm as the threshold; Germany uses 150 cm. A 140 cm child who no longer needs a seat in Germany still legally needs one in Portugal’s private vehicles and rideshare. The taxi exemption in Portugal applies to licensed taxis in both countries, but the underlying height thresholds are different. Always use the destination country’s threshold.
